Peter Zimmermann, Prof. Dr.

(Germany) German Armed Forces, Colonel Prof Dr Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist

Oberstarzt Professor Dr. med. Peter Zimmermann, born on January 18, 1967, is a senior medical officer in the German Armed Forces and currently serves as Head of Division III 4 – Operational Readiness and Support, and as the Commissioner of the Federal Ministry of Defense for Deployment-Related Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders and Deployment-Traumatized Service Members. He is married and has one child.


He began his military career in 1986 at the Medical Academy of the German Armed Forces in Munich. From 1987 to 1993, he was on academic leave to study human medicine at the Hannover

Medical School. After completing his medical studies, he held various medical and leadership roles within military hospitals and medical centers, particularly in the field of psychiatry and

psychotherapy. His career includes positions as assistant physician, senior physician, head of psychiatric departments, and clinical director at the Bundeswehr Hospital in Berlin. Since March 2024, he has been leading the Division for Operational Readiness and Support III 4, while also serving as the official representative for the German Ministry of Defense in matters concerning deployment-related PTSD and trauma.


Academically, Prof. Dr. Zimmermann earned his doctorate in 1994 and completed a specialist certification in psychiatry and psychotherapy in 2002. He holds additional qualifications in

psychotherapy, group analysis, EMDR trauma therapy, psychodynamic-imaginative trauma therapy, medical quality management, and special psychotraumatology. He is also a certified Balint group leader and has served as an instructor in psychotherapy training programs.


In 2012, he completed his habilitation at Charité Berlin, where he was awarded an adjunct professorship in psychiatry in 2020. He is co-editor of the journal Trauma und Gewalt and has

played a leadership role in several professional committees and working groups on military psychiatry and psychosocial medicine, both nationally and internationally.


Prof. Dr. Zimmermann has participated in multiple international deployments, including missions in Bosnia (1997–1998), Afghanistan (2003 and 2012 with ISAF), and Kosovo (2006 with KFOR).


In recognition of his service, he has been awarded the Bundeswehr Cross of Honor in Bronze, Silver, and Gold.
